Last Updated: August 17, 2025

Are you looking to craft with a modern design depicting beautiful, beachy scenes? This new stencil from Altenew is perfect for creating backgrounds, or in this case make it the centerpiece of your project.

Hello crafty friends! It's Nathalie with you to share a new creative idea on how to bring texture to your projects using Brilliant Waves Background Stencil. Today,  I want to show you how you can incorporate it into a 6x8 spread documenting your travel memories. Let's take a look at what I have created with this stencil:

Turning Plain Paper Into A Colorful Background

The first step to bring texture to your projects is to use color/inks to bring the details in the design of the Brilliant Waves Background Stencil.

For this project, I am opting to break the look of the stencil by breaking it into sections, this allows me to customize the end look of the design. Having partial images of the stencil will allow me to extend the design with a few adjustments.

Here is how I created the photo side of the spread

  • Attach an 8.5x11 white cardstock to 9x12 Ultra Sticky Mat, and place the Brilliant Waves Background Stencil to the top right corner of the paper.
  • Using  Rocky Shores Fresh Dye Ink start creating the design on the stencil, then switch to Pink Sand Fresh Dye Ink to continue the design, to finish the top half of the stencil with Sand Dunes Fresh Dye Ink. This will create an ombre effect to the top part of the stencil impression.
  • Start the impression of the waves in the stencil by blending Sea Breeze fresh Dye Ink, and continue until almost all of the design has been completed.
  • Clean the stencil, and flip it over before moving to a new section on the paper
  • Use Turquoise Fresh Dye Ink to create the impression of the waves only part of the stencil on the cardstock.
  • Clean the stencil, and flip it over before moving to a new section on the paper.
  • Use Tide Blue Fresh Dye Ink to create the bottom section of the stencil.
  • Set aside to dry, before trimming each of the colored stenciled section.

Time to Bring Texture To Your Projects

Now it is time to use the colored pieces of the stencil to bring texture to your projects in a fun and innovative way.

  • Trim a 7.5"x8.5" piece of patterned paper.
  • Using scissors start by fussy cutting the sand and first blue section of the stenciled background into one piece and adhere to the top of the page at about 1/4" from top and left edges of the page.
  • Trim the next blue section/strip of the stencil and carefully distress the top edge if the strip before gluing to the page following the design of the stencil.
  • Lightly curl/distress the top edge of the remaining edge of the stencil before adhering it to the page -Note:  the pieces are attached to the page so that the edges overlap the bottom edge of the previous layer, this creates the wave look/texture of the stencil
  • Carefully fussy cut the Turquoise stenciled waves into two strips that start at the striped section of the impression, distress/curl the top edge of each piece
  • Since the design is the reverse of the original stencil design, carefully adhere the pieces so they overlap the ones on the page - see photo for close up-
  • Fussy cut the wave design in the Tide Blue section (bottom section) of the stencil, distress and curl the top edge to form the wave.
  • Adhere to the background so it completes the design at about 1/4" from left and bottom edges.

Add Finishing Touches To Your Projects

The last step on how to bring texture to your projects featuring Brilliant Waves Background Stencil is to add a few finishing touches to make the page shine.

  • Use Obsidian Pigment Ink and the stamp set from Craft Your Life Project Kit: Floral Odyssey to create the title sentiment
  • Use the coordinating die to die cut the sentiment three times, stack, and glue them together to create the die cut.
  • Using thin foam adhesive adhere to the top right corner of the stenciled background.
  • Using Pure White Ink Spray add ink to the edges curl edges of the wave section of the stencil making sure that area is saturated.
  • Carefully add splatters of the ink around the edges of the waves - this should bring the idea of sea foam-
