How To Get More From Die-Cuts by Chopping Them Up! | Terrific Tags with Michelle (With Video Tutorial)

Hello there, Michelle here with Terrific Tags with Michelle and another edition of Creativity Unlocked featuring Craft-A-Flower: Lily of the Valley Layering Die Set. Today I am chopping up die-cuts to suit my needs!

Lily of the Valley Layering Die Set: Chop Up Die-Cuts

I started off my tag by die cutting the Craft-A-Flower: Lily of the Valley Layering Die Set from Classic Crest 110lb Solar White Cardstock.

Since the die-cut is bigger than I need it to be to fit on my tag, I grabbed my Fine Blade Scissors and cut half of the stem of flowers off. I can save that for another project.

I also cut one of the leaf pieces down, so that I could use it upside down. I felt this fitted in with my design better. Don't be afraid to chop up your die-cuts if it suits your needs better!

Ink Blending & Flower Assembly

I placed the die-cuts on my Sticky Mat and added ink blending to them using Micro Blending Brushes.

I added Green Valley Fresh Dye Inks (Firefly, Grass Fields & Shadow Creek) to the stem and leaves, and a little Sweet Dreams Fresh Dye Inks (Dew Drops & Aqualicious) to the flowers.

TIP: White is always a difficult colour to show in card making. Adding just a little bit of shading to white die-cuts really adds depth to them. You can use a number of colors to add shading for something to appear white, but for today, I used aquas. Grays work well too!

I then adhered the flowers to the stem using the keyhole system and liquid glue.

Tag Background

I wanted the flowers to pop against the background and a great way to do this is to use a dark background. Today, I am using black.

I die cut two of the largest Terrific Tags Dies from Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock. For some added interest, I mixed a little Titanium White Artists' Gouache with water and then using a paintbrush, splattered it onto one of the tags.

Once the tag was dry, I adhered the other tag to the back using Glue Tape. This adds some stability to the tag but also gives a clean place to write a message (you can use white gel pen for that!).

Tag Assembly

I added Instant Dimension Foam Tape to the back of the flower heads and liquid glue to the stem. It was adhered to the tag, popping the leaves in behind the stem before the glue dried.

I stamped the ‘just for you' sentiment from the So Happy Stamp Set onto more Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock using Embossing Ink.

I applied Pure White Crisp Embossing Powder and heat set. It was cut into a strip and adhered to the tag with more foam tape. To finish, I tied twine through the top of the tag and tied in a bow.
