Elevate Clean and Simple DIY Projects with Stamping, Stenciling, and Die-Cutting (With Video Tutorial)
Hello there, Michelle here with another edition of Terrific Tags with Michelle where I'll be sharing some tips and tricks to elevate clean and simple DIY projects using stamping, stenciling, and die-cutting. I'm also a simple DIY tag using the gorgeous Peony & Lilac Swag set.
Stamping the Design
I started off my DIY tag by stamping the beautiful image from the Peony & Lilac Swag Stamp Set onto Classic Crest 110lb Solar White Cardstock using Obsidian Pigment Ink and the Stampwheel. I stamped the image twice to make sure I got dark and crisp lines – this really does make a big difference to clean and simple projects. I also stamped the sentiment from the set, again stamping twice, to get a good impression.
I let the ink dry for a few minutes and then took one of the largest tags from the Terrific Tags Die Set and placed it over the floral image, holding down with low-tack tape before running through my die cutting machine.
I also cut the sentiment using the coordinating die in the Peony & Lilac Swag Die Set.
Simple Stenciling & Ink Blending
There are so many different ways to elevate clean and simple DIY projects with ink blending – using bold colors for example, or combining colors, but for today, I wanted to keep it simple!
I placed the tag onto a Sticky Mat and then placed the first stencil from the Peony & Lilac Swag Simple Coloring Stencil Set (4 in 1) on top. The Sticky Mat holds the tag and stencil in place while ink blending.
For the peony, I used Rose Petal Fresh Dye Ink Collection (Rose Quartz, Purple Wine & Cosmic Berry), adding the ink using a Mini Blending Brush. To add the look of dimension, I focussed the darker saturation of color at the bottom of the petals and left a white highlight at the top.
I continued coloring the peony using the same ink, and then for the lilacs, I used Enchanted Garden Fresh Dye Ink Collection (Wisteria, Hydrangea. & Ultraviolet). I started off by adding color using a Mini Blending Brush, but then for the darkest color, switched to a Micro Blending Brush.
TIP: Using a smaller blending brush will give you more control to help focus the color exactly where you want it.
For the leaves and stems, I used Green Valley Fresh Dye Ink Collection (Firefly, Grass Field, and Shadow Creek). I love the color combination of all these inks together!
Finishing the Tag
To bring the tag together, I die cut another of the tag shape from Classic Crest 110lb Solar White Cardstock and using Glue Tape, adhered them back to back. I die cut two hole reinforcers from the Labels & Tags 2 Die Set from white cardstock and adhered them to the tags.
I die cut the sentiment die another two times from white cardstock and adhered them one on top of another, with the stamped one on top, to create dimension.
TIP: Adding even just a little dimension to clean and simple DIY projects will help elements pop!
Watch the video below to see how I messed up the sentiment and then see how I fixed my mistake! I added twine through the top of the tag and tied in a bow. The sentiment was then adhered onto the tag using liquid glue. To finish this DIY project, I embellished with Crystal Clear Gem Sparkles.
