Coloring Secrets to Transform One-Layer Cards!

Hello, lovely crafters! Erum here. Today, I’m excited to share a fun and vibrant coloring project with you: a one-layer card featuring stunning florals from Altenew's Craft Your Life Project Kit: Blossoms of Encouragement and the Sunshine Valley Garden Artist Alcohol Markers. One-layer cards are my absolute favorite, as they allow you to focus on beautiful colorwork and details without any added layers or embellishments. Let’s dive into this step-by-step tutorial and learn some tips to elevate your one-layer cards!
Stamping Your Florals
Start by taking a full-size Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock. Using the Stampwheel 2.0, place your Blossoms of Encouragement stamp in the center of the panel and stamp it using Obsidian Pigment Ink. Rotate the panel and stamp the same image on the top and bottom edges, creating a beautiful floral frame. This layout will give you a balanced and engaging composition.
Once you've finished stamping, trim the cardstock into A2-sized panels. Feel free to stamp more floral elements if you need extra coverage. Use the remaining three panels to color with pencils or ink blend. I will decide later what to do with mine, but at least I have three extra panels all stamped and ready for future use!
Coloring the Florals with Artist Markers
Now comes the fun part: coloring! I used a combination of pinks and yellows for the florals and a variety of greens for the foliage. Let’s break it down:
Pink Florals:
- Start from dark to light using Razzleberry, Rubellite, Pinkalicious, and Pink Diamond markers. Begin with flicking motions to lay down the darkest shades at the petal bases and gradually move to lighter shades, leaving the petal tips light for contrast.
Tip: Use the tip-to-tip technique (kissing) to add detail to the florals to add details!
Sunflower:
- For the sunflower, I used Honey Drizzle, Maple Yellow, and Fresh Lemon. Start with the darkest shade at the petal bases and blend outward with lighter shades.
Green Leaves:
- To color the leaves, begin by adding shadows along the midrib using the Mountain Pine marker. Then layer Shadow Creek, Grass Field, and finally Firefly to create depth. Add a hint of Citrus Burst to change the tone and give the larger leaves more dimension. (watch video)
Step it up – Ink Blending for a Smooth Background
Now, we’ll add some light ink blending. I used Grass Field Fresh Dye Ink and Altenew’s Detailed Blending Brushes to add a soft green hue around the stamped florals. The small blending brushes allow for precise inking, getting into the nooks without leaving harsh marks. Be sure to take off excess ink on your sticky mat before applying it to your panel for a smooth and even blend.
Step it up MORE! – Adding Depth with Shadows
Next, we’ll add subtle dimension with Monochrome Shading Pencil 10B. Using small circular movements, apply pigment along the lower edge of the stamped images to create a soft shadow. Blend the graphite using a blending stump to give the illusion that the florals are popping off the page.
Splatters & Sentiment
To add a finishing touch, I used Jet Black Ink Spray to add delicate splatters, mainly on the right-hand side of the panel. These splatters give the card a more organic look. Afterward, I stamped the sentiment “You are enough, always” onto the left-hand side of the card, balancing the overall layout. Once done, I adhered the card to a card base with Glue Tape.
