Crafting a Stunning Floral Card: A Step-by-Step Guide with Carol Hintermeier

Hello! This is Carol Hintermeier here and I am super thrilled to be a guest today on Altenew’s Blog! I have been a cardmaker for close to 20 years and an Altenew fan for several years! You can see more of my cards over on my blog at Crafting By Carol and my Instagram. I first discovered Altenew’s beautiful floral stamps and fell in love with their layering stamps, layering dies, and then stencils! With Altenew’s layering Simple Coloring Stencil Sets, we have even more ways to color our images.

With the stencils being one of my favorite crafty items right now, I thought I would share details of how I made my card with the beautiful Bold Bouquet collection of products. The bundle includes an Outline Stamp Set, a Botanical 3D Embossing Folder, a Simple Coloring Stencil Set, and a Die Set.

I’ll put my steps to make this card in a list format to make it easy for you to following along. These next steps use the Bold Bouquet Stamp Set.

• Place a 4-1/4” x 5-1/2” piece of 80# white cardstock onto the sticky mat of the Stampwheel. 
• Position the Bold Bouquet Outline Stamp onto a corner of the cardstock. (A portion of the stamp will overhang the cardstock.)
• Pick up the stamp with the flip plate and ink it up with Jet Black Crisp Dye ink.
• Stamp it onto the cardstock.
• Rotate the flip plate to position the stamp in the opposite corner.
• Repeat the stamping steps.

Next we will use the Bold Bouquet Simple Coloring Stencil Set.

• Remove the sticky mat from the Stampwheel and place the stamped panel in the center of the mat.
• Position stencil #1 over the stamped floral image.
• Use Mini Blending Brushes and Carnival Magic Fresh Dye Inks to color through the stencil.
• Tip: Begin with the lightest shade, Cotton Candy, and add at the outer edges of the petals with your blending brush.
• Continue inking through the stencils with Coral Red and Cherry Sweet inks.

• To really step up the drama and dimension, use the #10 brush from the Detail Blending Brush set to add the darkest shade of Rhodolite.
• Use the same steps for stencil #2 and #3.
• Stencil #4 is for the leaves. Use the Green Valley Crisp Dye Inks for coloring.
• Add some Firefly ink at the ends of the leaves and continue coloring with the three other inks.
• Be sure to use the #10 Detail Blending Brush for the darkest ink, Mountain Pine. With the coloring finished, we will add texture with the Bold Bouquet 3D Embossing Folder!
• Add a few small pieces of removable tape to the back of one corner of the finished panel.
• Using the black lines of the stamped image, place one corner of your panel into the embossing folder.
• When you have it aligned, press firmly to adhere the tape. See this next photo for an example.

• Run the embossing folder through your die cutting machine following the directions for 3D embossing folders.
• Note: Be sure to place the top plate of the embossing sandwich just beyond the portion being embossed.
• Align the embossing folder with the other corner and repeat.
• Trim the panel to 4” x 5-1/4”.

Now that we have the gorgeous stamped, stenciled, and embossed piece done let’s finish up the card! Because we have a black stamped outline, I like to add more black elements to bring cohesive feel to the card.

First, I’ve added a black cardstock layer to the floral piece that measures 4-1/8” x 5-3/8”. Then I added black paint splatters to the card. I used diluted black acrylic paint and splattered it with a paint brush. Next, I used a black gel pen to color in the stamens of the large flowers.

When the splatters are dry, I glued the layers to an A2 card base. Then I stamped two sentiments from the Bold Bouquet stamp set in Obsidian pigment ink. I cut out the “happy” with the coordinating Bold Bouquet die set. Then I trimmed the other sentiment into a strip and adhered both with foam tape.

 

This was such a fun card to make! The Bold Bouquet collection is one of my favorites that has
lots of possibilities for different styles of cards. I hope you’ve been inspired by my card today!
