Combining Texture and Color in Your Projects (With Video Tutorial)
Hello crafty friends! It's Nathalie with you to share a new creative idea for combining texture and color in your projects featuring the new Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments. I am loving the combination of the detailed and delicate frames and the two types of florals that are included in this kit. The possibilities of the two different flowers give the project a fresh new look each time, it is all in the color and combination of the pieces. I wanted to incorporate them into one of my 6x8 Journal entry in a way that it gives the spread a gallery feel.
Let's take a look at what I have created with this new Craft Your Life Project Kit in my album.
Using Color to Bring Interest
Let's start with this idea for combining texture and color in your projects by exploring the idea of background building, and how it works to help highlight all the photos in this spread.
I have quite a few photos for this spread with different colors in them, so in order to avoid a clash of colors in the page, I am choosing to build the background of the page in a neutral/monochromatic combination. This will allow the details in the photos and frames shine while still bringing interest to the pages.
Here is how I created the backgrounds for this spread in one single color application:
- Trim two 5"x8.5" piece of white cardstock for the base and lay them side by side on the Original Sticky Mat.
- Use the Stencils for Flower B in the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Frozen Moments to create the impression of the flowers along the junction of the two cardstock pieces .
- Start with Marble Dust Fresh Dye Ink to the first stencil impression. Position the next stencil design, and with Silver Lining Fresh Dye Ink color in the impression.
- Position the stencil again, and use the same color ink and extra pressure to create the impression.
- Switch to the next stencil. and using Coastal Fog Fresh Dye ink color in the impression.
- Finish the stencil impression using Iron Gate Fresh Dye ink. Then move the stencil to create a new impression until the entire length of the paper has been completed.
- Use Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments Stencil A to create the floral impression at the top left and bottom right edges of the paper using the same color combination.
- After the ink has dried, use the stenciled edges to create the journaling pages -colored edges to the outside of each page-.
Creating Framing Backgrounds
Now that the backgrounds are ready, it is time for the next step in combining texture and color in your projects by creating a floating gallery for the images. The texture of the 3D Embossing folder in the Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments adds lots of interest and highlights the photos.
Adding Texture in a Clean and Concise Design
I was inspired by a clean gallery look for my pictures that will show the photos and the details of the frames at once. Having a floating panel just worked to highlight the edges of the frames. Here is how this was created:
- Cut a 7"x 8.5" of heavy acetate for the base
- Use Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments Die to cut 8 rectangular frames from Brushed Gold Metallic Cardstock.
- Using Craft Your Life Project Frozen Moments 3D Embossing folder to add texture and detail to each of the frames.
- Back seven (7) frames with photos, being careful to have the edges of each photo just around the inside edge of the opening in each frame. Set them on a grid fashion on the acetate.
- To create the title frame, use Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments Stamp set and Marble Dust Fresh Dye Ink to add impressions of the silhouette flowers on white cardstock.
- Back the last frame with the stamped cardstock and adhere it to the last spot in the grid.
- Use Bold Numerals Die and Brushed Gold Metallic Cardstock to create die cuts for the title and adhere them to the stamped cardstock in the frame.
- Use Obsidian Pigment Ink and Craft Your Life Project Kit Frozen Moments stamp to add a sentiment below the number die cuts.
- Add Chasing Shadows Enamel Dots next to the stamped sentiment and throughout the stamped backgrounds.
