What Are 3D Embossing Folders?
An embossing folder is a translucent white plastic folder with designs or patterns embedded in it. It has a raised side (also called the “positive side”) and a recessed side (also called the “negative side”). This white plastic folder is usually embedded with various designs, patterns, shapes, etc. There are two types of embossing folders: 2D (standard) and 3D.
While it isn’t exactly a new tool for paper crafters, 2D and 3D embossing folders have gained popularity. The best thing about this tool is that it comes in different sizes, making it perfect for many paper crafting projects.
Here are the standard embossing folder sizes:
- 4” x 6”
- 5.5” x 4.5”
- 5” x 7”
- 6” x 6”

What is the difference between 2D and 3D embossing folders?
The most significant difference between a 2D embossing folder and a 3D embossing folder is the level of depth it adds to a surface. While both are handy in creating instant dimensions on any paper crafting project, 2D embossing folders usually only have one level or layer of depth and dimension. On the other hand, 3D embossing folders are designed to have different levels of depth, added undulations, and layers, resulting in realistic designs that pop off the page.
This doesn’t mean 2D ones aren’t ideal for your handmade creations. This type of embossing folder will still add some pizzazz to your project and is great for quick and instant backgrounds. You can easily layer other elements on the embossed image for added texture and interest. While sizes vary (depending on the manufacturer), most 2D embossing folders are 1/16” thick.
If you need something that packs more punch, 3D embossing folders are your go-to! Not only will these add instantly stunning and realistic backgrounds to your paper crafting projects, but you can also explore various card making techniques and use different mediums with these. There are various sizes in the market but these are usually ⅛” thick.

How Do I Use 3D Embossing Folders?
If you’ve ever wondered how to use 3D embossing folders, don’t worry - you’re not alone. Most people who are unfamiliar with this tool might find it a bit intimidating, especially upon seeing the result it creates. Here are three easy steps on how to use 3D embossing folders.
- Place a cardstock (or your chosen paper) between the embossing folder.
- Follow your die-cutting machine’s user manual. For some machines, it’s as simple as cutting plate A + embossing folder + shim + cutting plate B.
- Run it through the machine.
How Do Embossing Folders Work?
The raised side (embossing side) and recessed side (debossing side) of an embossing folder play a huge role in how it works. The two sides perfectly fit when pressed together. Placing a paper or cardstock between the two folders and running it through an embossing/die-cutting machine forces it into the raised side and creates the embossed impression. The raised area in the cardstock is created when the pressure from both folders squeezes the paper’s fibers.

Hi, Laurie! Our designers have used their 3D embossing folders with their Big Shot without an issue. However, we highly recommend checking your manual for the machine to see what plates you need to use. :) Thank you!
Is the Big Shot machine compatible with 3-D embossing folders? I know it is with 2-D. Thanks!
Hello, Christine! To make it even all over, our designers suggest that you ink your cardstock first and then dry emboss it. When you dry emboss before inking, you are automatically going to get dark and light spots when you ink over it. The “higher” raised areas would be darker if you ink it after embossing. We hope this helps! :)
Hi – Really good tutorial. Thank you! I do have a question , though – What is the best way to color over the embossing making it even throughout the design? Thanks
