How to Add Shine to Projects with Hot Foiling | Terrific Tags with Michelle
Hello there, and happy New Year to you! Michelle here with another edition of Terrific Tags with Michelle.
Today I am sharing how to add shine to projects using hot foiling. I am using both foil plates and press plates for my foiling today. Isn't it great that you can you use both?
Foiling with Press Plates
Did you know that you can foil with press plates? They foil beautifully! I started off by cutting a piece of Brushed Gold (Satin) Hot Foil Roll to size and placed it shiny side up onto a piece of Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock.
I then placed the dotted plate from Geometric Essentials: Circles Press Plates on top, design side down. I just wanted the 3 middle lines of dots from the plate, not all of the lines, so I made sure to center the foil in the middle of the plate. I held everything down using low-tack tape.
I heated up my Glimmer Hot Foil System and then once hot, placed the sandwich that I made with the plate side down. I placed the shims on top and then pressed the button to start the timer. Once the timer button had turned solid green, I removed the platform, placed it back in and repeated the process.
TOP TIP: I like to heat up press plates for double the length of time compared to hot foil plates. I get a better impression that way!
Once heated up for a second time, I removed the platform from the base and ran it through my die cutting machine. I carefully removed the tape and then lifted off the plate.
TOP TIP: If you have any over-foiling, you can use the tip of the Comfy Cut Craft Knife to remove any excess foil. Carefully glide it over the foil to remove it without damaging the cardstock underneath.
I then repeated the process using Rose Gold (Satin) Hot Foil Roll.
Creating the Tags
I placed one of the middle-sized Terrific Tags Dies on top of the foiled panels and ran it through my die cutting machine to create the base of my tags. I really love the contrast between the black and the foiling on top!
I die cut the Zero-Waste Chocolate Flowers Die from Vellum Translucent Paper first. I then cut two of the leaf pieces from Gilded Glitter Cardstock – Brushed Gold for the Brushed Gold tag and Topaz for the Rose Gold tag.
They were adhered to the tag using Instant Dimension Foam Tape, as well as a little liquid glue, being careful not to have adhesive showing through the vellum.
Foiling with Hot Foil Plates
For the sentiments, I took the Essential Sentiments Hot Foil Plate and hot foiled it onto Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock using the same Brushed Gold (Satin) and Rose Gold (Satin) Hot Foil Rolls.
I used the same process as above – placing the foil shiny side up on the cardstock, placing the plate design side down on top and holding in place with low-tack tape.
Since this plate is meant for foiling, I find that I only need to heat up the platform once to get a perfect impression, but I did use an extra shim for both the hot foil plate and press plate as that worked better for my machine and this particular cardstock. Experiment with what works best for you!
I die cut the sentiments out using the Essential Sentiments Die and cut each end down further to the size I wanted. They were adhered to the tags using Instant Dimension Foam Tape and Glue Tape.
To finish the tags, I tied black twine through the top and tied in a bow at the front and then embellished with Black Enamel Dots.
