Guide to Card Making Embellishments: Sparkle with Enamel Dots & Gems
Key Takeaways
Maximized Versatility: See how a single stamp set (Regal Flourishes) can create four distinct looks simply by varying your ink colors and embellishment choices.
-
The Big Three: Elevate your projects using three essential types of card making embellishments:
Gem Sparkles: For high-shine and faceted light.
Enamel Dots: For bold, colorful, and modern pops.
Pearl Dots: For soft, timeless, and understated elegance.
Placement Strategy: Use embellishments to guide the eye—try clustering them in corners to "frame" a sentiment or scattering them around a focal image to add movement.
Embossing Alternative: If you want sparkle without the "lift" of a physical dot, use gold heat embossing to add a metallic, integrated glow to your stamped designs.
Hi Altenew friends and fans! I hope you are in the mood for some embellished fun today, as I will be using Enamel Dots, Gem Sparkles and Pearl Dots on the cards today. The reason being that there is an offer on all of these embellishments, May 5-6th only. If you have been looking to top up your embellishments stash, or if you need a reason to spoil yourself, a promotion is a great reason.
Let's Talk Embellishments
As the self-appointed Mayor of Bling Town, I do love me some embellishments in all shapes, colors and varieties. I am also a smidge guilty of over-blinging aka going to town with the embellishments, but I think they are so fun and add so much interest and personality to each card. You can actually have the same basic design and then make each card unique with your choice of different colored Gem Sparkles, some enamel dots for fun layers and pearl dots for subtle elegance.
I really, really think that embellishments are quite a fun way to find out what kind of personality you are. Are you quiet and reserved, adding just a few? Are you like yours truly and throwing caution and moderation to the wind and adding embellishments with wild abandon? Or perhaps somewhere in-between?
Let's talk options, and let's be honest, options are never a bad thing, right? Down below I have linked some of my absolute faves, that I reach for over and over again, in case you need some recommendations or are looking for something new to try.
Enamel Dot Must-Haves
With enamel dots I love the bright colored packs! I tend to be less generous with these as embellishments on my cards, but I think that has more to do with the fact that they make such a statement on their own perhaps.
Pearl Dots Must-Haves
The pearl dots I really like for quiet and understated elegance. You get so many in a packet that they last a long time too, even for someone like me who is a chronic over-embellisher!
I thought it would be fun to show you four cards, all made with the same stamp set, the outrageously gorgeous Regal Flourishes Block stamp set, the same Fresh Dye Ink color family (Tranquility) and embellished in different ways.
First, I stamped up four panels with the stamp set and the inks. I used a different ink combo for each one, as I didn't want them all to look the same. I can really see this set becoming a staple. It's simple, yet elegant AND you can use it to cover an entire card base with the help of a Stampwheel 2.0!
Next up it was time for the fun bit aka embellish the cards and finish them off with sentiments. All sentiments are from the stamp set, and some are stamped directly onto the panel, and some have been stamped up and die cut out.
I really wanted to make sure I used all embellishments that are on offer, on these cards to cater to everyone's likes and inspiration. On the card above I even mixed and matched embellishments, which I don't do often enough.
On the card below I have used the Smoky Quarts Gem Sparkles both around the stamped image, to draw the eye in, as well as used some of the smallest embellishments to add even more interest to the image.
I really think this stamp will look fabulous with some gold heat embossing, which is another fabulous way to add some sparkle and elegance, if you don't want to "cover up" the image with embellishments. The heat embossing will be its own kind of embellishment in a way.
For the fourth and final card I have gone for Crystal Clear Gem Sparkles. Super simple, yet sparkly. I think they work so well with the paler color palette too. The sentiment is stamped right in the middle of the card, and the Gem Sparkles are placed in clusters in the corners, to frame the sentiment and the image. Simple, but elegant. If I may say so myself.
I hope you will find something here that sparks your creativity!
Hopefully you will get a chance to watch the YouTube video too, but that's it from me for today. With love and light, sparkle and creativity from your embellish-mad gal, Erica.
