Throwback with Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos

Key Takeaways

  • Versatile Floral Styling: The Altenew Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos set can easily transition from soft, ethereal looks (using pinks and a layered vellum border) to bright, sunny designs (using vibrant yellow ink blending).

  • Softer Outline Alternative: Swapping standard black stamping ink for lighter shades like Silver Stone or Industrial Diamond creates a much softer, more realistic outline for your floral card panels.

  • Built-In Background Textures: The collection includes a dedicated fourth stencil specifically for backgrounds, making it easy to apply Iridescent or Gold Glitter Relief Paste for instant dimension.

  • Packaging Inspiration: Don't throw away the product insert! The Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos packaging includes curated color recipes (like the Rose Petal combo) and layout ideas perfect for jumpstarting your creativity.

  • Elevated Card Finishing Touches: Elevate handmade birthday cards by layering trimmed background panels for a clean border, using Instant Dimension Foam Tape for depth, and adding Smoky Quartz Gem Sparkles for a high-end finish.

Hi and welcome back to the Altenew blog! It's Erica with you today for a Throwback Thursday post, featuring the incredible Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos set. This particular collection is easily one of my favorite Build-A-Garden sets—it's bright, beautiful, and features sentiments with an absolutely fabulous font.

Crafting a Special Birthday Card with Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos

I recently needed a special birthday card for my sister, so it was the perfect excuse to break out one of my favorite Build-A-Garden sets. I wanted to use some bright, happy colors alongside the coordinating layering stencils to make something truly eye-catching.

To kick off the project, I stamped up two different panels with the large floral image from the Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos stamp. Rather than using harsh black ink, I chose:

  1. Silver Stone Crisp Dye Ink

  2. Industrial Diamond Crisp Dye Ink

Using these shades instead of black gave the outlines a much softer, elegant, and ethereal look for these cards.

Styling the Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos (Two Ways)

Option 1: The Vibrant Rose Petal Blend

The Rose Petal Fresh Dye Ink is hands-down one of my favorite pink color families. (In all transparency, I actually have the oval Crisp Dye Ink pads, not the round Fresh Dye Inks... yet!).

If you look at the Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos packaging, you'll see a gorgeous Rose Petal color combination suggested right on the front. I followed that inspiration but went a little darker around the top of the petals to create a more realistic, 3D look.

For this first flower, I used a mix of vibrant pinks and bright greens, then used the coordinating die to cut it out. I also cut a duplicate piece out of vellum and did a little creative cutting, so the vellum peeked out all around the edges. This added a beautiful, dreamy layer to the main bloom.

Option 2: The Soft, Sunny Yellow Blend

After cleaning off the coordinating layering stencils, I moved on to the second panel. I did this version in bright yellows over the Silver Stone stamped outline for an ultra-soft look.

Pro Tip: Make sure to open up the packaging on all of your Altenew Build-A-Garden sets! They contain fantastic insert guides with color and design inspiration. This sunny yellow scheme was directly inspired by the packaging guide.

Creating Textured Backgrounds with Layering Stencils

One of the reasons these Build-A-Garden sets are so versatile is their incredible value. In this particular stencil set, there are three stencils dedicated to adding color to the flower, and a fourth stencil designed exclusively for backgrounds.

The Grey & Iridescent Glitter Background

For my first background, I applied Iridescent Glitter Relief Paste through the background stencil onto Morning Frost Crafty Necessities Colored Cardstock.

The geometric pattern is absolutely gorgeous, and the Iridescent Glitter Relief Paste looks fabulous catching the light against that soft grey cardstock.

The White & Gold Glitter Backgrounds

I didn't stop there! I made a second background panel using the same stencil layer, but this time I paired white cardstock with Gold Glitter Relief Paste.

While I had my supplies out, I also created a couple of extra panels using the Antique Gold Metallic Ink Spray for a splattered, luxury effect.

The photo shows three gold backgrounds.

To prep the pieces for assembly, I applied Ultra Sticky Double-Sided Tape to the back of the background panels and popped Instant Dimension Foam Tape onto the back of the fussy-cut flowers.

Card Finishing Touches & Final Assembly

Finishing the Pink & Grey Card

The photo shows a closeup of the pink card.

I decided to trim down the grey glitter background panel slightly to give it a lovely, crisp white frame against the card base. This added even more depth and texture to the final design.

I mounted the pink flower right on top and finished the card off with a classic heat-embossed sentiment from the Pocket Sentiments set.

Finishing the Yellow & Gold Card

For the gold glitter card, I attached the stenciled background directly to a card base without trimming it down. I popped the yellow Build-A-Garden Sulfur Cosmos flower up using more foam tape and finished it with a stunning gold heat-embossed sentiment included right in the stamp set.

Because this is a special birthday card for my sister, I decided to go all out with the sparkles. On the grey and pink card, I added Iridescent Crystal Gem Sparkles from the Smoky Quartz collection.

I know this card is a little over the top, but my sister has been through a lot recently and she deserves a card that brings ultimate sparkle and joy to her day!
