3 Scene Building HACKS for Simple Scenes
1. Background Balance
My first step when scene building on a card is making the background. I like to work from background to foreground. In my scene, I went for a weathered sepia-tone photograph. I also took inspiration from vintage postage stamps with two-tone coloring.
To create balance, I knew I would make a dynamic focal foreground element. I left the background simple with some distressing and a die-cut frame.
2. Fantastic Focal Points
The next element of scene building is my focal point–the part of your card that is your focus. Think of this as the subject of your photo if you are at a photo-worthy landmark or the person in your portrait. I built my scene as if I were looking through the flower bush to see the vintage greenhouse in the distance.
Another essential element to card scene building is your sentiment. Aside from your subject, you want your recipient to see the message you want to send them. Consider this important element in your overall composition.
3. Compelling Compositions
The last and final scene-building rule is your composition. Where do you want all your pieces to go? I typically follow the Rule of Thirds.
If you think of your card scene as 3 linear subdivisions vertically and horizontally, the four points where these lines intersect are considered visually appealing areas. Focal points in your scenes should go in these areas. Make sure you check the video to enforce the understanding of the Rule of Thirds.
