Jewel-Toned Bold Florals on a Dark Background
Whenever I’m unsure where to start, I turn to my favorite jewel-toned color palette — it’s rich, inspiring, and full of life. This time, I wanted to take things up a notch by pairing these luxurious jewel-toned florals with a dark, dramatic background. The contrast between the vibrant hues and deep navy creates a striking handmade card that feels both bold and elegant.

Inking the Jewel-Toned Flowers
Stamp one of the floral clusters from Build-A-Garden: Breezy Petals in Embossing Ink and heat-emboss it with Antique Gold Embossing Powder on Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock.
Start with Stencil 1to apply your base layers:
- Use Pink Pearl, Pinkalicious, and Lavender Fields Fresh Dye Inks.
Begin with peach tones, follow with pink, and use purple.
Tip: Blend peach + pink or pink + purple, but avoid purple + peach to prevent muddiness.
Adjust hand pressure for variation—lighter for soft petals, heavier for bold contrast.
Add Mid-Tones, Layer Variation and Deepen the Shades
Reposition the stencil to work on the smaller flowers.
Use Lavender Fields primarily, adding just a touch of Pinkalicious.
For the open flower, blend Pinkalicious and Pink Pearl, making it slightly darker for depth.
Switch to Coral Bliss, Rubellite, and Deep Iris inks for the second layer.
Start with Coral Bliss, then overlap Rubellite.
Add Dark Night very carefully to flower centers for instant dimension and enhance the jewel-toned colors.
Place the stencil with the leaves:
Ink the base with Deep Iris, leaving the tips light.
Layer Dark Night at the base for contrast.
-
Ink the flower centers completely in Dark Night for a cohesive, dramatic finish.
Background Twist and Finishing Touches
- Cut one-inch strips from Arctic Mountain and Dark Night Cardstock.
Adhere them alternately to your card base with Glue Tape or Double-Sided Tape, then trim the edges for a neat finish. Die-cut the jewel-toned floral cluster and adhere it to the card front with Instant Dimension Foam Tape.
Trim the overhanging pieces and re-adhere them for balance.
Die-cut “Just a Note” from Scripty Sentiments using Gilded Glitter Cardstock and vellum.
Attach it to the card front.
Finish with a few Stellar Sequins in Champagne for added sparkle.
Add splatters of gold metallic paint for texture and shine.
Gold works really well with jewel-toned florals, so both the sequins and splatters will elevate the design.
And that’s it — a quick and easy jewel-toned card bursting with vibrant color and gold accents! The contrast of the dark background brings everything to life beautifully.
