How to Add Faux Splatter to Projects (With Video Tutorial)
Last Updated: September 6, 2025
Hello there, Michelle here with another edition of Terrific Tags with Michelle. Today I have a fun technique to share - faux splatter.
I love adding splatter to projects but sometimes I struggle to control it. Today I am sharing a way to add splatter in a controlled way using Fine Liner Pens.
Creating the Focal Point
I started off my card by creating the focal point which is a tag. I took one of the images from the Cornered Blooms Outline Stamp Set and stamped it onto a panel of Classic Crest 110lb Solar White Cardstock.
I then took the tag die from Best Wishes Tags Die Set and placed it so that the image is on the left-hand side of the tag. It was run through my die cutting machine, as well as die cutting the hole reinforcer from the set too.
This is a great way to use the corner stamps in a different way!
I placed the tag onto my Sticky Mat to hold it in place while I added ink blending on top.
Using a Small Blending Brush, I first added a light layer of Pink Diamond Fresh Dye Ink, coming in from the left-hand side. I lightened up my touch towards the right-hand side, so that the ink faded out to the white of the cardstock.
I then went in with Pinkalicious Fresh Dye Ink, followed by Razzleberry (with a Mini Blending Brush) to darken the left-hand side up even more.
I adhered the hole reinforcer to the top of the tag, threaded black twine through the hole and tied in a bow at the front.
The tag was then adhered to an A2 (4.25" x 5.5") sized white card base using Instant Dimension Foam Tape.
I stamped a sentiment from the Cornered Blooms Outline Stamp Set (masking off the rest of the sentiment to just have the word hugs) onto Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock using Embossing Ink.
I applied Pure White Crisp Embossing Powder and heat set. It was cut into a strip and adhered onto the tag with Instant Dimension Foam Tape.
Faux Splatter
I wanted to add some extra detail onto the card but as I said before, I do struggle to contain splatter sometimes when using paint, so for today's card, I thought I would add faux splatter using Fine Liner Pens instead!
I first made small dots using a pencil as to where I wanted the splatter to be. You could definitely go in staright away with the pens, but I was worried I may end up getting the splatter where I didn't want it! If i don't like the splatter pattern I make with the pencil, it can easily be erased!
I went in first for the larger splatter dots with the 03 pen, followed by the 01 pen for the middle-sized ones, and then the 005 pen for the small splatter dots. It's really helpful having the different size of nibs for the different sizes of splatter!
