What Is Black Friday and Why Is It Celebrated?
Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving Day in the United States and, since 2005, it has been deemed the “busiest shopping day of the year.” In modern society, when you say Black Friday, people often associate it with shopping. Retail stores across the US offer the lowest prices and biggest sales on this day, making it the best time for holiday shoppers to start shopping. However, this seemingly innocuous holiday has a bit of dark history behind it. Pun intended.

A Brief History of Black Friday
On November 29, 1975, the term “Black Friday” first made its appearance in The New York Times and was referred to as "the busiest shopping and traffic day of the year in Philadelphia.” Why is it only in Philadelphia? How did the term Black Friday come about?
As an adjective, black has always been used to refer to something chaotic and disorganized, like a calamity or disaster. In 1960, the police officers of Philadelphia and Rochester called the Friday after Thanksgiving “Black Friday” to refer to the chaos that ensued due to huge crowds of holiday shoppers, the large number of suburban tourists visiting the city, the Army-Navy football game, and heavy traffic all around the city. The term caught on among business owners who saw an increase in sales during this time. To make it sound better and more appealing, a PR expert recommended rebranding the day and changing its name from Black Friday to “Big Friday.” They also included the Saturday after Thanksgiving, calling it “Big Saturday.” Unfortunately, the change in names didn’t catch on.

FUN FACT! “The earliest known use of "Black Friday" to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, for November 1951, and again in 1952. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, to have a four-day weekend.” (Source: Wikipedia)
It wasn’t until the late 1980s when the phrase Black Friday was used to refer to the biggest and busiest shopping day in the United States as business owners, and retail stores started riding the bandwagon. It signified the day when retail stores and businesses all over the country began gaining more profit, thanks to their special Black Friday deals and sales. Retailers and merchants made the whole “red-to-black profit” narrative work on their side. They enjoyed other popular and catchy shopping holidays such as Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday.

Did you know? The day after Thanksgiving became the official holiday shopping season thanks to the popularity of Thanksgiving and Santa Claus parades such as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the US and Eaton’s Toronto Santa Claus Parade in Canada. These department store-sponsored parades signaled the start of Christmas shopping, creating an “unwritten rule” among store owners that there won’t be any advertising or holiday sales before the parades.
Fun Fact! Have you heard about “Franksgiving?” A Christmas shopping and Thanksgiving controversy in the 1930s resulted in a presidential proclamation by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The tradition of advertising Black Friday deals and sales after Thanksgiving was important to retail store owners. However, they also wanted an extended shopping season. For this reason, President Roosevelt proclaimed “Thanksgiving to be the fourth Thursday in November rather than the last Thursday, meaning in some years one week earlier, to lengthen the Christmas shopping season.” Some still stuck to the original Thanksgiving date and mockingly referred to the new date as “Franksgiving.”

When Will We See the Official Black Friday Deals?
While most stores hold pre-Black Friday sales or early bird promotions, others start at precisely midnight on Black Friday itself. Some companies would start offering special deals and discounts as early as the first or second week of November to get ahead of the competition. There are a few stores offering fun activities and gimmicks for their customers, such as collecting discount codes or coupons in the days leading up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
