2 Ways to Customize Die-Cut Flowers (With Video Tutorial)

Last Updated: December 4, 2025

Hello there, Michelle here with another edition of Terrific Tags with Michelle. Today I am sharing two ways to customize flowers:

  1. Add texture to the petals using scoring lines. This can also be done using embossing folders and press plates.
  2. Not using all the layers for the flowers. Depending on the flower, this can completely change the look of it!

Customize Flowers with Different Amount of Layers

I started off my flower by die cutting the petals and center from Craft-A-Flower: Coral Charm Peony Layering Die Set from white cardstock.

I decided for this flower to only use some of the layers. This is the great thing with using sets like these, you can create the flower as intended, or you can customize it and use as many or as little of the layers as you want!

For the petals, I used layers 1, 2, 3 & 4, and for the flower center, I simply used the first layer. I also cut the leaves from white cardstock.

Cutomize Flowers by Adding Texture

I wanted to add some texture to the petals, so I decided to do that with the Crafter's Essential Scoring Board. I placed each die-cut onto the scoring board and using the stylus, scored lines on each petal. I wanted a pattern similar to plaid, but you can create any pattern you like here for a truly customized look!

TIP: You can also use embossing folders or press plates here too. I think polka dots would look great on these flowers!

I placed the petals onto my Sticky Mat and added color to them with ink blending. I used Moonlit Twilight (Celestial Mist, Dreamy Periwinkle and Twilight Sky) for the petals, applying the ink with a Mini Blending Brush. The ink goes slightly darker where the embossed lines are and highlights them.

For the leaves, I kept them as is and just added ink blending to them with Green Valley Fresh Dye Inks (Firefly, Grass Field and Shadow Creek) and a Mini Blending Brush

I wanted to add some dimension to the petals, so I used the new Petal Shaper Tool Set (out soon!) to cup the petals slightly. The flower was then assembled using the keyhole system, adhering the layers together with liquid glue.

Creating the Tag

I die cut two of the larger tags from the Terrific Tags Die Set from white cardstock. I cut one down slightly to make it not as tall. I adhered the other to the back using Glue Tape and then cut that one down afterwards (using the first tag as a guide of where to cut to make them the same length).

I adhered the leaves on top, using liquid glue, followed by the flower.

I stamped the 'hugs' sentiment from Sentiment Strips Stamp Set onto Crafty Necessities: Jet Black Cardstock using Embossing Ink. I applied Pure White Crisp Embossing Powder and heat set. It was then cut into a strip and adhered to the center of the flower.

To finish, I tied twine through the top of the tag and tied in a bow.
