Ready to Paint?

Let’s take a look at the supplies you will need:

• Artists' Watercolor Tube - Phthalo Blue (PB.15)
• Artists' Watercolor Tube - Permanent Yellow Deep - (PY.65)
• Artists' Watercolor Tube - Toluidine Red - (PR.3)
• Artists' Watercolor Brushes - Round
• Watercolor Paper Set (A2 loose sheets)
• Watercolor Palette - Medium
• Satin Masking Tape

Project 1: Blue Skies

In watercolor painting, the paper's natural white color often represents the whitest or the lightest parts, and Phthalo Blue is a great hue to paint the gorgeous blue skies! You can effectively paint clouds without using white paint by utilizing negative space. Paint a wash of Phthalo Blue and leave out the shape of the clouds. Create depth and perspective by adding shades of blue, gradually 'sculpting' the negative white space into shape.

Project 2: Lemon Craze

A sliced lemon fruit is almost all yellow if you carefully observe it, thus making it the perfect subject for monochrome painting! Paint the midtones and the lighter yellow parts by diluting Permanent Yellow Deep with water. The amount of water depends on how light you need the shade to be. The more water you use, the lighter the pigment will be. Leave out the wet, shiny, and white areas of the lemon. Use less-diluted, almost pure pigment of Permanent Yellow Deep to paint the darkest parts.

Project 3: A Red Betta Fish

The Red Betta Fish is the inspiration for this monochromatic red painting. Its flowing and flaring fins are particularly fun to paint. Start light by using diluted Toluidine Red to paint the basic shape of the fish. Use less-diluted paint as you move on to the darker parts. Leave out aspects of the painting where the highlights are and paint the background with a flat wash of Toluidine Red to emphasize the subject.
