Benefits of Crafting for a Cause

Crafting for a cause offers a wide range of benefits, both for the individuals you're helping and for yourself. Here are just a few reasons why using your crafting skills for good is so rewarding.

Altenew CEO and President, Nabil and Tasnim, donate winter jackets and other necessities for refugees to a local organization during a winter storm.1. Making a tangible impact.

When you craft for a cause, you can see the direct impact of your efforts. Whether you're creating handmade cards for seniors in nursing homes, donating food to homeless shelters, sewing clothes for children in need, or knitting hats for cancer patients, your work has a real and meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Altenew often donates crafting supplies to local craft store workshops and other card making events.2. Connecting with others.

Crafting for a cause can also be a great way to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for making a difference. Whether you join a local crafting group or participate in online communities, you'll have the opportunity to meet new people and build meaningful relationships.

Inspiring Ideas for Crafting for a Cause

If you're ready to start crafting for a cause but aren't sure where to begin, here are some inspiring ideas to get you started:

1. Knit or crochet blankets for homeless shelters or animal shelters.
2. Sew clothes, blankets, or make DIY toys for children in need.
3. Create handmade cards or DIY crafts for hospitalized children or elderly individuals in nursing homes.

Altenew aims to make senior citizens in nursing homes feel loved and remembered by sending handmade cards to them through its annual card drive. If you’re looking for a way to donate your handmade cards, join our annual Celebrating Parents Card Drive

This event aims to spread love, one card at a time by collecting card donations from paper crafters all over the world and allowing them to share handmade kindness. The card donations are mailed to various senior homes and care facilities all over the US, just before Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, to ensure that our dear seniors feel loved and remembered.

Altenew has a curated collection of products that are perfect for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. Our team also handpicked a few Altenew products that are perfect for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards (and other year-round crafting projects!). We donate $1 with every order of the products included in this special collection (during the Card Drive) to the Food Bank of Central New York to support seniors in need.

If you want to share your passion for cardmaking and make someone’s day, keep an eye out for this year’s Celebrating Parents Card Drive. We hope to see your handmade cards soon!

Getting Started with Crafting for a Cause

Ready to start using your crafting skills for good? Here are some tips to help you get started:

    • Research local organizations. Start by researching local organizations in your area that accept handmade donations. Whether it's a homeless shelter, a children's hospital, or a senior living facility, there are likely plenty of opportunities to get involved right in your own community.

Altenew sponsored a number of computers and printers for a public school library in a mountainous area in the Philippines. This initiative helped indigent students who required computers and printers to assist with academic work and research.

Did You Know? Last year, Altenew launched an internal incentive program to motivate company employees to get involved in service projects. Altenew Cares was established as a company-wide initiative, allowing any Altenew team member to suggest a service project for the company to support. Read more about Altenew Cares here.

    • Reach out to existing groups. Many crafting groups and organizations are dedicated to using their skills for good. Reach out to these groups to see how you can get involved and contribute to their cause.

    • Set realistic goals. When getting started with crafting for a cause, it's important to set realistic goals for yourself. Consider how much time you can realistically commit to crafting and set achievable goals based on your availability.
    • Spread the word. Once you've started crafting for a cause, don't be afraid to spread the word about your efforts. Share your projects on social media, reach out to local news outlets, and encourage others to join you in using their skills for good.

Altenew President Tasnim Ahmed helped hand out winter jackets, blankets, and more to refugees at a local shelter in New York.Crafting for a cause is a wonderful way to make a positive impact on the world while doing something you love. Whether you're creating handmade cards, painting, sewing, crocheting, or making jewelry, there's no shortage of ways to use your skills for good. We have a small group at church “Crafts for Missions”. We are a group that crochets baby blankets for our local Pregnancy Resource Center, Hats and Scarves for Samaritans Purse, Lap Blankets for Gordon Hospice House, Prayer Shawls for those who are shut-in, those who are battling cancer, etc. We meet the first Thursday of every month to crochet together but then you continue to crochet at home.
I make Christmas Ornaments (glass) to sell and the money goes to a mission that God speaks to me. I use to go on mission trips, out of the country before Covid hit and now the wars in the Middle East.
Let’s get busy and do more!!!
